Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) English novelist, pamphleteer, and journalist.
Robinson Crusoe (1719), his most famous book, tells the story of a man shipwrecked alone on an island. Along with Samuel Richardson, Defoe is considered the founder of the English novel.
