Bruce Springsteen turns sixty

Rock legend Bruce Springsteen - also known as The Boss to his legion of loyal fans - has turned 60. He celebrated his birthday yesterday, 23rd September.

The prolific singer-songwriter has been a permanent figure on the music *landscape since the early Seventies. His first album, Born to Run, *released in August 1975, is considered by fans to be one of his greatest *achievements. But the singer is probably more widely recognised for his commercially and critically acclaimed 1984 hit album Born in the USA.

Here you are some curious facts about his life:

  • Full name: Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen.

  • Springsteen has so far won a total of 18 Grammy Awards.

  • He dreamed of becoming a baseball star as a child.

  • He nearly gave up on his other dream of becoming a guitar player - believing his hands were too small to play the instrument.

  • He received his first guitar at the age of five as a gift from his mother.

  • He sold more than 65 million albums in America alone, and 120 million worldwide.

Change the world

Read the dialogue and answer the questions.

Kate:
Mum, are we enviromentally-friendly?
Sue: I don't thinks so. It's not very important anyway.
Kate: But if everyone tried, it would make a big difference. And we could also save money.
Sue: Really? How?
Kate:
We could save energy if we used energy-saving light bulbs...
Sue: But they're more expensive than normal ones!
Kate: Yes. But they don't break for a long time. You could save $20 a year.
Sue: Oh, that sounds like a good idea, then.
Kate: And we could save water too. If we didn't take baths -if we showered- we would only use a quarter of the water needed for a bath. And we should reuse shopping bags too, then we wouldn't need to get a new bag every time we went to the supermarket.
Sue: Well, now that you mention supermarkets, please take this bag. If you don't go and buy some sausages, we won't have any lunch today!

1. Are Kate's family environmentally-friendly at the moment?
2. Why are energy-saving light bulbs more economical than normal ones?
3. What saves more water -having a shower or having a bath?
4. How can we recycle shopping bags?

Rubbish!

How much rubbish does your family throw out? Believe or not, most families throw out more than two kilos of rubbish a day for each person in the family! But what do people put in their rubbish bins? A popular magazine asked schoolchildren in the USA to write down everything they threw away for five days. What was the most common thing they threw out? Paper! Do you think these schoolchildresn were different form most Americans? They weren't . In the USA, 38% of the rubbish is paper. There is computer paper. There are sweet papers, cereal boxes, magazines and much more. Paper recycling isn't just a popular environmental topic , it's a necessity. What are you doing to help?
